A practical, local guide with real routes, real traffic patterns, and real transit options.

Commuting from Rockaway isn’t one universal experience — it depends on where you live, where you’re going, and how you get there. But no matter which part of Rockaway you call home, your day almost always begins the same way: with one of the major roads that define daily life here.

Starting the Day: Borough vs. Township

If you live in Rockaway Borough, you’re only a few turns from Route 80. The morning feels efficient — tight streets, quick access, and a short glide onto the highway. It’s one of the reasons Borough residents often describe their commute as “straightforward.”

If you live in White Meadow Lake or Lake Telemark, your morning starts on quiet, wooded roads. It’s peaceful, but you’ll spend a few extra minutes winding toward Route 80 or Route 46. That’s the trade‑off for lake life, space, and calm.

If you live in northern Rockaway Township, your commute may begin on Green Pond Road or Hibernia Avenue, eventually connecting you to Route 23 — a completely different set of options that Borough residents never use.

Route 80: The Backbone of Rockaway Commuting

Almost every Rockaway commuter touches Route 80 at some point. It’s the main east–west artery, and you quickly learn its patterns.

Eastbound (Morning Rush)

The most predictable slowdown happens at Exit 43, where Route 80 merges with I‑287. It’s a heavy merge every weekday morning, and it’s the spot locals mentally prepare for.

A few miles later, the split toward Route 280 creates another bottleneck. If you stay on Route 80 instead of taking 280, you can continue all the way to Exit 53, where Route 3 begins. Route 3 is a major commuter path toward Clifton, Rutherford, Secaucus, and the Lincoln Tunnel corridor — a common choice for people who prefer driving into NYC rather than using trains or buses.

Westbound (Evening Rush)

The drive home usually slows around the Rockaway Townsquare Mall exits and the Denville/Parsippany corridor. It’s typical New Jersey evening traffic — not chaotic, just part of the rhythm.

Route 46 & Route 10

Route 46 runs parallel to Route 80 and is often used by commuters heading toward Fairfield, Totowa, or Route 3. Route 10 is the main corridor toward Morris Plains, Hanover, and Livingston. Both roads offer alternatives when Route 80 feels too congested.

Route 24 → Route 78 → Garden State Parkway

If your commute takes you toward Summit, Short Hills, Newark Airport, Union County, or the GSP corridor, your route is usually:

Route 80 → Route 287 → Route 24 → Route 78 → Garden State Parkway

It’s a long chain, but it’s the fastest way to reach central and southern destinations.

Route 23 (Northern Rockaway Township)

Residents near Green Pond Road, Split Rock Road, Upper Hibernia, or the northern end of Lake Telemark often use Route 23, which connects to Wayne, Cedar Grove, Verona, Route 46, Route 80, Route 287, and Route 280. It’s a quieter, more scenic start to the day, but it opens up a wide range of commuting options.

The Real Feel of the Commute

Commuting from Rockaway isn’t glamorous, but it’s predictable. You learn the timing, the shortcuts, the difference between leaving at 7:10 and 7:25, and the days when Route 80 feels like it’s testing your patience.

But the drive home is the part locals love — that moment when you turn off the highway, the noise drops away, and you re‑enter a quieter world of lakes, trees, and neighborhoods that feel like home.

Rockaway’s commute isn’t defined by miles. It’s defined by rhythm — and by options.
